How to Stretch a Leather Bracelet? Easy 4 Ways

Introduction

Your client has ordered a leather bracelet that fits her perfectly at first, but in a few weeks has gotten too tight. This happens all the time; leather naturally shrinks and hardens with age. When you know how to stretch leather properly, you can give your clients the remedy for this sizing trouble. This keeps them happy and reduces returns.

Want to learn how to stretch a leather bracelet? In this guide, you are going to learn the 4 proven ways of enlarging leather bracelets and the right way to take care of them after they are stretched.

Why Does Your Bracelet Need Stretching?

Natural Shrinkage

Leather slowly dries out over time. Once the leather fibers start drying out, they pull together and the bracelet shrinks. The process is accelerated with temperature change. A bracelet worn in an air conditioned office in summer will shrink than a bracelet worn in humid weather. Dry air will remove moisture from the leather much faster. This shrinking process occurs normally with genuine leather products.

New Leather Stiffness

Fresh leather from the factory hasn’t been broken in yet. The fibers are tight and haven’t adapted to your wrist shape. A braided leather bracelet or strap style needs time to become flexible. New leather behaves like new boots – it needs wearing to soften up. The material hasn’t molded to your body yet. Most new pieces feel stiff for the first week or two of regular wear.

The fresh leather is new and therefore has not yet been used; the strands are tight and have not yet been molded to the shape of your wrist. This is also true of braided leather bracelets or straps, as they need time to become flexible. The new leather is like new boots, as they have to be worn for a time to become flexible.  Most new pieces feel stiff to the touch for the first week or two.

Measurement Error

Sizing mistakes can occur when you purchase online. You might measure your wrist at home and be within a few millimeters, you might have left and right wrist sizes that are different, or you may have gained or lost weight which can odd affect your wrist size, as well. Also, sometimes customers do not take into account the watch they wear with the bracelet.

Preparation: What You Need Before You Start

Before you start stretching your bracelet you need to clean it. That’s very important because dirt and oils from your skin will make it impossible for the leather to accept conditioner. Use a slightly damp cloth and wipe both sides of the bracelet gently. Set it aside for a least 10 minutes to dry.

Things You will Need:

  • Leather conditioner- Mink oil, neatsfoot oil, or leather balm will work fine.
  • Soft cloth- Cotton is best for applying oil.
  • Stretching object- wine bottle, deodorant stick, or jar (larger than wrist).
  • Water spraying bottle- Not necessary, only for Method 2.
  • Cotton swabs- For tight places.

It’s best to have everything ready before you attempt stretching the bracelet, it generally makes for a smoother procedure. Do not skip the cleaning step, it makes an incredible difference in the final absorption of the conditioner.

Method 1: The Gentle Conditioning Approach (Low-Risk, Gradual)

This process is the best method for precious items and beginners. The leather fibers are soft and flexible when moisture is put back into them.

The Gentle Conditioning Approach (Low-Risk, Gradual)

Steps to take:

  1. Put a little leather conditioner on your cloth
  2. Rub the conditioner in on the inside and the outside of the bracelet
  3. Use circular motions to rub it in well.
  4. Softly bend the bracelet in your hands for 3-4 minutes
  5. Find a round object slightly larger than your wrist (a wine bottle works excellently)
  6. Put the bracelet on the object
  7. Let it dry naturally for 6-12 hours
  8. Keep the bracelet away from sunlight and heating sources.

The conditioner moistens the leather fibers, and this causes them to flex. The bracelet firms up and keeps this new shape when it dries on a larger object. This method takes the longest but has the least chance of damaging the leather.

Method 2: The Controlled Moisture Approach (Medium-Risk, Faster)

This technique is quicker to work, but you have to be careful. Too much water will ruin the leather forever. The leather will become stiff, cracked, and discolored if it is soaked.

The Controlled Moisture Approach (Medium-Risk, Faster)

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Spray a very light mist of water on only the inside (suede) side. It should be damp but not wet.
  2. Apply the leather conditioner immediately in order to seal in the moisture.
  3. Put the bracelet immediately on the wrist.
  4. Allow the braid to dry for 2-4 hours while you are wearing it.
  5. It will stretch to fit you perfectly from your body heat as well as your wrist shape.

Important tips:

  • The bracelet should be damp but never dripping.
  • If water drips off, you have used too much water. Wipe it off immediately.
  • The skin’s natural oils help the process of stretching.

This method of wearing the piece when damp gives you a custom fit. The leather will stretch exactly where your wrist needs it. Just don’t wear it when soaking wet.

Method 3: The Mechanical Tool Approach (For Stiff/Thick Leather)

Some leather bracelets are too thick to stretch them with your hands.

Here is the way to do it:

  1. Apply conditioner to the entire bracelet. (This is the same method as method 1.)
  2. Let this conditioner work for 5 minutes.
  3. Get a jewelry mandrel or a cylinder of some kind, (a deodorant stick, etc., a jar, a rolling pin, etc.)
  4. Put the bracelet on the narrow end of the cylinder.
  5. Slide it slowly down toward the larger end.
  6. Stop when it begins to feel tight. Do not force it.
  7. Leave it there for 24 hours.
  8. Remove and see how it fits.

A jewelry mandrel works the best because this is a gradually larger cylinder. This allows you to stretch it just the right amount. Too much force, however, will cause the leather to tear or the stitching to break. You should slow down and check your progress.

Method 4: Utilize Excess Length

Most people don’t know about this trick. Your bracelet has some hidden length in the clasp. When manufacturers make magnetic leather bracelets they glue in about 1cm of leather cord in the clasp. This length can be used.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Lightly heat the clasp with a lighter for 20-30 seconds
  2. This will cause the glue to loosen
  3. The leather cord can now be pulled out exposing the hidden length
  4. Re-attach only about 0.5cm of the length into the clasp and
  5. Allow the glue to set completely

This gives about an extra 0.5cm of length of wearing length. This is generally enough to make a snug bracelet a comfortable one. For detailed instructions, please refer to out guide to how to shorten a leather bracelet – learn how to take the leather from the clasp and re-attach it.

Post-Stretching Care and Maintenance

After stretching the bracelet, you have to take care of it properly. This makes it so that the bracelet feels good and will not shrink again. If leather is taken care of properly, it will last for years without much change in size.

The last conditioning steps are:

One more very thin coat of conditioner will have to be put on the bracelet after it has dried completely.

It must be rubbed in gently with the fingers.

This seals the leather and locks in the new shape.

Long-term care tips:

  • The leather should be conditioned every 2-3 months.
  • This leather should be wiped off with a damp cloth after being worn in warm weather.
  • Keep it away form extreme heat.
  • Don’t wear leather in the shower or swimming pool.

Conclusion

Getting your leather bracelet to stretch requires patience, but the results are worth it. The best results will be obtained through oil conditioning and a little slow wear. You can get a nice custom fit at home using some basic materials. Always try the gentler methods first, and if they don’t do the job, try the stronger ones. Always allow a full day between stretching to avoid injury to the material.
