Introduction
Jewelry retailers lose a lot of money due to one common error: stocking incorrect size ratios. Rings made from non- resizable material (such as stainless steel) become unsalable when you stock them with the wrong sizes.
So if someone comes into your store to purchase a size 10 ring and you only have a 7 and a 13 in stock, you’ve lost a sale you cannot get back. The solution is very straightforward: take the time to learn what the average ring size for men is, and build your stock based on actual sales history, rather than what you think will sell.
What is the Average Ring Size for Men?

In the United States, the average ring size for a male is size 10, which would be approximately a 20mm inside diameter or a 62.8 mm circumference.
However, the most significant aspect for your business is that these three sizes ( 9, 10, and 11) do the 80% of the work. If you can stock these three sizes well, you will be able to take advantage of the largest portion of your market.
Sales Distribution by Size
OOTB has been engaged in men’s jewelry manufacturing for over 7 years. We collected our 5 years’ men’s ring size data, and below are our statistics for your reference.
| Ring Size | Percentage of Production | Priority Level |
| 10 | 40% | Critical |
| 11 | 20% | Critical |
| 9 | 20% | Critical |
| 8 | 8% | Important |
| 12 | 7% | Important |
| 13+ | 5% | Low |
And we found a interested thing is that, the before 2023, we produced very small quantities of size 12 and 13. But from 2024 to 2025, sizes 12 and 13 are produced more than previous. We found that this is because men wear rings on multiple fingers now, including thumbs and index fingers for statement pieces. These fingers need larger sizes, so don’t ignore the 12-13 range completely.
Differences in Ring Size Terminology
Different country has its own systems to determine ring size. The US uses a number system to indicate size, while the UK uses a letter system, and Europe uses millimeter measurements of the inside circumference of the ring.
Being aware of these conversions will save you time and money by preventing errors. An example of an error: A US size 10 is equivalent to a UK T½ and is equal to 62.8mm in European sizing. If you make this error, all of your stock will arrive incorrectly sized.
Below are the average men’s ring sizes by system. For detailed conversions of all international systems, refer to our complete ring size chart.
| Country | Measurement System | Average Size |
| USA | Numerical (1-16) | Size 10 |
| UK | Alphabetical (A-Z) | Size T½ |
| Eu | Circumference (mm) | 62.8 mm |
Tips: If you’re going to customize a ring with a jewelry manufacturer from China, you should notice that they often use the USA measurement system.
The “Cheat Sheet” Table
Your audience has various body types, and you require more than just the average size. For example, a 6-foot-tall man with a body weight of 220 pounds is unlikely to have the same size as a 5’8″ tall man weighing 150 pounds. If you have record these data of your client, it will be helpful for your next order decision.
Below is our analysis derived from the questionnaire records of hundreds of people for your reference. Body type, genetics, and the finger they will put the ring on determine the final size.
| US | UK | EU (mm) | Diameter (mm) | Typical Height | Typical Weight | Notes |
| 7 | N½ | 54.4 | 17.3 | 1.63 -1.73M | 54 -68kg | Smaller frame |
| 8 | P½ | 57.2 | 18.2 | 1.68 – 1.78M | 63 – 77kg | Below average |
| 9 | R½ | 59.5 | 18.9 | 1.73 -1.83M | 72 – 86kg | Common |
| 10 | T½ | 62.8 | 20.0 | 1.78 – 1.88M | 81 – 95kg | Average/Most common |
| 11 | V½ | 65.3 | 20.8 | 1.83 -1.91M | 90 -104kg | Above average |
| 12 | Y | 67.8 | 21.6 | 1.85 -1.93M | 99 -113kg | Larger frame |
| 13 | Z+2 | 70.0 | 22.3 | 1.88 – 1.96M | 108 -122kg | Very large |

How to Improve Your Sales?
Statistical Historical Data
Get your sales data for the last year. See how many rings sold at each size. Your top 5 sizes are where you spend most.
If size 10 rings sold 100 each but size 13 rings only sold 5, don’t buy 100 size 10 and 5 size 13.
Don’t go to zero for any size. If size 7 sold only one last year, still have 2 or 3. That one customer with size 7 will tell the world when you, not the other guy, gave him what he needed.
Work with a Flexible Manufacturer
Find suppliers who let you customize order quantities by size. Some manufacturers force you to order the same amount of every size, which creates the exact problem we’re trying to fix.
At OOTB, we let wholesale clients specify exact quantities for each size. Need 100 size 10s, 50 size 9s, and 20 size 12s? This is our mission to help make jewelry business more easier.
Morerover, our factory handles stainless steel rings with manufacturing tolerances within 0.5mm, so a size 10 measures exactly 20mm every single time.
Reducing Returns
Provide branded sizing tools for your client. A plastic ring sizers only around 0.3 to 0.5USD each, but it can save them $15-$20 in shipping and restocking costs associated with returns. This is because when customers know their size prior to ordering, return rates decrease by 60%-70% for customers who used the correct sizing tool as opposed to those who guessed.
And if your ring sizers with logo, each time they use or sharing with their friends or families, offering free publicity for you.
Factors That Change the Fit of Ring Size for Your Client
The Dominant Hand
The hand someone uses most grows slightly larger from repeated use. Right-handed people have a right hand that’s about a half-size bigger than their left hand.
If a customer measures his left hand at size 9, his right hand might be size 9.5. Always ask which hand will wear the ring before measuring.
Knuckle vs. Base
Some men have knuckles much wider than the base of their fingers. The ring needs to slide over the knuckle but sit at the base.
Always size for the knuckle. If the knuckle measures size 11 but the base is size 10, order size 11. A size 10 won’t fit over the knuckle. The ring might spin a bit at the base, but that’s better than not fitting at all.
Bandwidth
A wider band will feel much tighter than normal, thinner bands. A person may find a 2mm band in a size 10 to be comfortable, but when purchasing a size 10, an 8mm band will feel as though it is sized 9.5.
When customers are considering buying bands that are wider than 6mm in width, you should advise them to go up a half to full size, especially when the statement ring is worn on the index finger due to the increased width of the bands in most cases.
Weight Change
Gaining or losing more than 10 pounds usually results in a change in finger size, as fingers hold fat, in the same way as most other parts of the body.
So, if your clients are currently losing weight, you tell your client to consider about these factors, it will be very helpful and improve your potential sales in the future by your professional.
Temperature and Weather
If you’re selling jewelry and your customers are in different climates, this could be an issue. So, be professional to teach your client:
Cold makes fingers shrink by as much as half a size. Heat makes them swell by as much as half a size.
Take measurements around the middle of the day when the temperature is normal. Don’t take measurements first thing in the morning (too swollen) or late at night after a run (also swollen).
How to Measure at Home for Your Client
The String/Paper Method
Cut a thin strip of paper or find a piece of string, then wrap it around your finger, use pencil to mark the place that overlaps, then measure the length in mm, and use size chart to match the correct size.
Please note, these methods are free, but there’re approximate 15% error rate, which is caused by the string or paper are wrapped too tightly or too loosely.
The Existing Ring Method
- Find a ring that fits the correct finger well
- Measure the inside diameter in millimeters
- Match that measurement to a size chart
Place the ring on a ruler and measure straight across the inside. A size 10 ring measures 20mm exactly.
This method works great if the existing ring actually fits well. Many people wear rings that don’t fit properly and don’t realize it.
The Sizing Kit
Plastic ring sizers are the most accurate home measurement method.
Providing free ring sizers for your client is the most accurate way to help your client make measurements at home.
If reducing returns is a priority, send free ring-size kits. First sale will pay for it. Simply include a prepaid return envelope so customers can return it after use; you can use it again for the next customer.
Conclusion
It is simple to align ring sizes properly, but it makes a dramatic difference to your profitability. Size 9, 10 and 11 should be stocked heavily. Sizes 8 and 12 should be a small portion of the stock. Purchase small amounts of odd-sized rings so that you don’t lose sales on those sizes while also minimizing the amount of dead stock. Review your sales data at least once a quarter and adjust your ratios based on what sold, rather than what was expected to sell.
